1. The "Passenger vs. Luggage" Math

The most common mistake travelers make is booking a car based on the number of seats rather than the volume of cargo.

You might think: "There are only 3 of us, so a 4-seater car is fine."

The flaw in this logic: If you are going on a two-week ski trip or an international flight, your luggage volume is likely double that of a weekend domestic traveler. A standard car boot (trunk) is designed for weekly groceries or two medium cases, not the heavy haul of an international expedition.

2. Vehicle Capacity Breakdown

The Saloon (Sedan)

Common Models: Toyota Prius or equivalent.

This is the standard "taxi." It is comfortable and economical, but the boot is an enclosed box. It has rigid boundaries.

The Estate is the unsung hero of airport transfers. It offers a deeper, longer boot floor without the height of a van.

• Ideal For: Golfers, Musicians, Families of 3.
• Max Capacity: 4 passengers + 2 large checked suitcases + 2 medium suitcases.
• The "Long Item" Advantage: This is the minimum requirement for Golf Clubs, Skis (check length), or collapsible wheelchairs.

The Executive

Common Models: Mercedes E-Class, BMW 5 Series or equivalent.

The Executive category upgrades the comfort and finish, but it does not increase the published passenger or luggage allowance.

• Ideal For: Business travel, special occasions and passengers who prefer a premium car.
• Max Capacity: 4 passengers + 2 large checked suitcases + 2 cabin bags.
• Important: Choose an Estate, MPV or 8-seater if luggage space matters more than vehicle class.

The MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle)

Common Models: VW Sharan, Ford Galaxy.

Now we are talking about vertical space. MPVs allow us to stack suitcases upwards, which is impossible in a saloon.

• Ideal For: Families of 4, Ski Groups.
• Max Capacity: 6 passengers + 4 large checked suitcases + 4 cabin bags.
• The Secret Weapon: If you are only 3 or 4 passengers, we can often fold down the rear seats to create a massive cargo bay.

The 8-Seater (The Transporter)

Common Models: Mercedes Vito, VW Transporter.

The ultimate solution. This isn't just a van; it's a mobile warehouse with luxury seats.

• Ideal For: Large families, Film crews, Excessive luggage.
• Max Capacity: 8 passengers + 8 large suitcases + 4 cabin bags.
• Bonus: You can often stand a pram upright without dismantling it entirely.

3. Handling "Awkward" Items

Not all luggage is a neat rectangular box. Here is how to handle the tricky stuff.

Baby Prams & Buggies

A collapsible "umbrella" stroller takes up the space of one medium suitcase. However, modern "Travel Systems" (with the bassinet and chunky wheels) can take up 50% of a saloon's boot space.

Advice: A pram counts towards the luggage allowance. If you have a large travel system and two suitcases, choose an MPV or 8-seater and tell us its folded size when booking.

Golf Clubs

A standard golf bag is longer than the width of most saloon car boots. To fit them in a saloon, we often have to force them in diagonally, which crushes other bags.

Advice: Always book an Estate car for golf clubs. It protects your expensive clubs and leaves room for your clothes.

Here is a scenario we see often: A family fits perfectly into a Saloon on the way to the airport. But while on holiday in Florida or Dubai, they buy three extra bags of clothes and gifts.

On the return journey, the car arrives, the same size car that took them, but now nothing fits.
