Like almost every major UK airport, Luton charges drivers to use the Express Drop-Off zone right outside the terminal. It costs £7 for the first 10 minutes, which is plenty of time to help someone out with their bags and say goodbye, then £1 for every additional minute up to a 30-minute cap. The zone sits about a 5-minute walk from the terminal entrance.
There are no barriers and no payment machines. Instead, number-plate cameras record your vehicle as you enter and leave, and you settle the charge online afterwards. That convenience is also the trap: because nothing stops you at a barrier, it is easy to drive off and forget to pay, which is when the penalty lands.
The same forecourt is used for quick pick-ups, and the same charges apply. If you are collecting someone whose flight has not landed yet, the drop-off zone is the wrong place to wait, both because of the per-minute cost and the 30-minute limit.
Payment is online only, at the official portal lutondropoff.apcoa.com. You will need your vehicle registration. The deadline is midnight the day after your visit, so if you drop off on a Monday you have until 23:59 on Tuesday to pay.
Set a reminder on your phone before you drive in, because the most common way people end up with a £95 charge is simply forgetting. There is no option to pay in cash at the airport, and no machine to catch you on the way out.
Miss the midnight deadline or stay longer than 30 minutes and you can be issued an enforcement charge of £95, reduced to £55 if you pay within 14 days. The zone is watched by mobile CCTV and number-plate cameras, so unpaid or overstayed visits are picked up automatically and a notice is posted to the registered keeper.
If you think a penalty was issued unfairly, for example you did pay on time or you never actually entered the paid zone, you can appeal using the instructions printed on the notice, which is handled by the airport's parking operator. Keep your online payment receipt as evidence. Appealing is not guaranteed to succeed, so paying on time remains the safest approach.
The first 2 hours are free. Park up, take the free shuttle bus that runs every 20 minutes and takes about 10 minutes, and you pay nothing. Best when you have a little time to spare.
