If you are visiting the UK or new to London, the taxi system can be confusing. You see the iconic Black Cabs, you see minicabs, and you see Uber. What is the difference? And more importantly, which one should you choose for an airport transfer?

1. The Hackney Carriage (Black Cab)

The Black Cab is a London icon. They are the only vehicles legally allowed to "ply for hire", meaning you can flag them down on the street.

• Pros: Great for short, spontaneous trips in Central London. They can use bus lanes.
• Cons: They run on a taximeter. This is the killer for airport transfers. The meter charges by time and distance. If you are stuck on the M25 for an hour, that meter keeps ticking. A trip to Heathrow can easily cost £120+.

All Prime Airport Transfer drivers are licensed by Three Rivers District Council. This means:

• They have passed an Enhanced DBS (Criminal Record) check.
• They have passed a medical exam.
• The vehicle undergoes strict mechanical testing twice a year (more than a standard MOT).

Warning: Never get into a vehicle that approaches you at an airport or station offering a ride. If it's not a Black Cab and you haven't booked it, it is an illegal, uninsured "tout." Always pre-book.
